Q: How do you cut strips up to 16 inches when the product I received has a 12 inch ruler? Description wrong maybe?

The ruler itself is 16 in. but it only has slots to cut up to 12 inches. This is mainly meant to make cutting multiple strips (such as 2 1/2") faster and easier. If you just want a 16" wide strip you are better off just using a regular quilting ruler with your rotary cutter on a cutting mat. If you want a 16" long strip you would need to carefully fold your fabric. There are tutorials on Youtube that show how to do that. I would not try to move the ruler once you start cutting. Too easy to mess up.

Q: Can you tell exactly how this works, I'm new to sewing and trying to mark accurate straight lines can this do the job?

You will love this ruler! Instead of me trying to explain how to use it, I would suggest watching a YouTube video. Soon after getting it I used it at a quilting retreat and the women who have been quilting forever were hooked. You won't regret this purchase. P.S. I'm also fairly new to sewing.

Yes you can. This is a great cutting tool. I use it for all sizes. It is in half inch measurements so all you have to do is decide what size you want from 1in all the way up to 12in and all size in between 1, 1.5, 2, 2.5 and so on. Hope this helps.

Q: What mat is recommended for this? I cannot find one that fits the dimensions.

You should watch the little video they have about this mat and how to use it. It is very informative and will give you a good idea of what you need. Basically, you use a mat that is larger than the ruler's dimensions. I don't know which size you are buying but that is the key.
